Took my wife into the Hospital because she had a lump that had appeared on the back of her head within the span of a couple of days
It was painful, so much so the pain radiated down into her neck and shoulders. I went with my wife into the ER and watched as quite an act played out.
The first person that came into the room was an office worker that was there to collect information. Like, do you have any insurance AND who is your insurer?
Then...
An RN eventually came into the ER room and inserted an IV into my wifes arm, ( further on you'll see why this was a total fuck-up ) drew blood for testing and left the IV there in case any solutions were required.
She requested that my wife pee in a cup for a urine sample, which my wife completed.
My wifes vitals were checked, and she was hooked up to a monitoring machine.
Some time later, a guy shows up and hooks my wife up for a quick EKG check. Everything looks good and away he goes off into the ER netherworld.
The RN returned and told my wife that she was going to be given a CT scan with contrast.
I pointed out that the urine sample was on a table next to my wife, and the RN moved the cup to the staff workstation there in the room and exited to room, leaving the cup behind.
A Doctor came in and repeated what the RN had said, and I told her that the Urine sample was still in the room and she replied, " Oh, well, don't really need that, but thanks ".
She exited the room and left the Urine sample there in the room.
The tech came and my wife had her CT scan completed.
The Doctor returned after getting the results and said, " Well, the goiter thyroid looks stable, it's the same size as it was when it was checked a few years ago. "
Both my wife and I were surprised. Um, what goiter thyroid? No one ever mentioned THAT before !
A discussion about that, and I asked the RN and the Doctor, since both were now in the room, what about the bump on the back of my wifes head?
They both appeared somewhat baffled and the Doc said that it didn't show up on the CT scan, so was probably just a muscle cramp.
Wow...I did know that there was a muscle just above the hair line on the head THAT could cramp up like that...
THEN
The Doctor exclaims that my wifes Red Blood Cell count is extremely high. And that she has Polycythemia, no big deal, since all my wife has to do is get her blood drained once a month or so.
My wife complained about the intensity of the pain she was feeling and the Doc had a nurse bring in a muscle relaxant for my wife to take and told my wife she would call over a prescription of it to the Pharmacy for my wife .
The Doc said my wife was good to go and make sure to see her Primary Physician.
The Doc & RN left, and I once again pointed out the Urine sample that was still by their computer, and they took it with them as they all left the room.
A nurse came into the room and helped my wife get her things together and escorted us to the exit.
So................
A few things :
1. Wife went into the ER for the bump on the back of her head.
2. They NEVER even looked at it.
--- isn't that a thing anymore? Doing a visual examination to SEE what it is the patient might have...like what if it was merely a bee sting and required the removal of the bees stinger? Hmmm?
3. The RN struggled with the manual goings-on. She made a mistake when she inserted the IV needle, blood squirted out, which required a worker to come in and clean the floor of my wifes blood that had pooled on it. And the RN nervously put some odd looking bandge on my wifes arm to hide what she did.
4. The RN fought with putting the tubes of the testing equipment together. Although will admit, she was a wiz with the computer.
5. My wife had went into the ER years ago regarding another place that had some swelling, and after all the tests, nothing was found. But now they had record of a goitered thyroid that my wife was never told about by anyone, at least until she went into the ER for something entirely different.
6. Why did they have her take a Urine test, then decide they didn't need it AND just left it in the room?
7. Why did my wife require an EKG ? She wasn't complaining about anything heart related and her vitals didn't seem abnormal, except maybe being a little high because of her pain.
8. She just had a blood test not more than 20 days prior to the ER visit. Which showed normal RBC levels. So, how do those numbers change that quickly and so dramatically that this ER Doctor is claiming my wife has Polycythemia.
9. A follow-up blood test the next day had pretty much the same results as the one she took 20 days prior, the Hospital just said, "Whoopsie, guess we just made a mistake."
And...
A CT scan with contrast wasn't necessary. The most effective test would have been an ULTRA-SOUND. Which my wife will be getting by a specialist later on this month, since the Hospital didn't do one.
And...
The muscle relaxant never worked. I had a OTC med combo formula that my dentist gave me for pain and my wife took that to relieve her pain.
And...
My wife STILL HAS THE BUMP !
of which a dermatologist will be examining.
What the F is wrong with the Hospital?
Long post, lots had to be vented.
I really think that our medical industry is going to get worse in the coming years. To have an RN struggling to do basic "manual dexterity" type tasks is scary.
Can tell that everyone there was reliant on technology and never were "hands-on".
