The Dead Sea Scrolls is believed to have been written by (or) kept in the library of the Essenes.
The Essenes are said to be a mystic Jewish sect. They felt that there was corruption in the Temple at Jerusalem and moved into the wilderness to seclusion.
It is difficult researching the Essenes since the data doesn't seem to follow any kind of solid timeline. This issue also exists for researching many subjects of ancient times, however, that will be addressed when those subjects are written about later on in the forum.
One source states that the Essenes flourished from the 2nd Century BC to the 1st Century AD. Yet, we find that of the Dead Sea Scrolls, "which are believed to be the Essenes Library", these documents have been untouched since from possibly 300 BC. Pliny the Elder wrote in his Natural History that the Essenes had "existed for thousands of generations". If the Essenes did exist for thousands of generations, that becomes of interest later as we navigate through ancient times. As an example, Abram ( Abraham ) may have originally come from Babylonia. That may not mean much at the moment, but it will, as we move into discussions of ancient cities and empires.
It has been said that John the Baptist was an Essene.
Perhaps that is why in Matthew 3:7 it is written of John the Baptist , " But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? " ( KJV )
Jesus, himself, was not kind in with his words in Matthew 23 regarding the Pharisees. ( Matthew 23 ; Bible Gateway )
Why is it that nothing was said about the Essenes? Doesn't that seem rather odd? However...
the Essenes referred to themselves as the Sons of Light. which Jesus does mention in the Bible.
Reference to the Essenes?
